Your guide for the “Non-tourist” attractions in Lisbon

Updated: Apr 24, 2022

Hello partners!

Thanks for stopping by. Today's post is a different type of guide to Lisbon. It is not another tourist guide, as it will not include the typical places to visit. This is a more relaxed guide, for those minimalists who want to keep it simple and experience good foodies and see the hidden gems that the city has to offer.

Lisbon was our home base before we decided to pack our bag and begin the nomadic adventure. We tried different neighborhoods, restaurants, coffees, parks, and we are excited to share with you the best of our experience. So, get your google maps ready for some pins!

Where to stay in Lisbon

We had the opportunity to experience some of the best neighborhoods in Lisbon.

Av. Liberdade

If you like elegance, this could be a good place for you. The main avenue is full of trees, theaters, architecture, and fancy shops. Enjoy a walk that can take you from Marques de Pombal all the way to the Praça do Comércio.

Marques de Pombal

The best part of this neighborhood is Park Eduardo VII. Enjoy the amazing view of the gardens, city, and river from the highest section of the park.

Santos

This seems like a trendy neighborhood, something like the "Condesa" neighborhood in Mexico City. You will probably love it here if you enjoy cute coffee shops and restaurants on every corner, and tiny streets (totally instagramable).

It was also one of my top neighborhoods because it has multiple options for brunch. I recommend walking through Rua da Esperança, you will find lots of hidden gems!

Also, you can go to Jardim 9 de Abril and have an extraordinary view of the Tagus River and the Ponte 25 de Abril.

Another great place close to the Santos neighborhood is Docas de Santo Amaro, it's right by the bridge and there a ton of options to sit and enjoy the marina view.

Best brunch in Lisbon

  • Dear Breakfast - for about 18 euro per person, you get the brunch package. What makes it different than other places? The atmosphere, minimalist decoration, friendly staff, portions are generous, food tastes delicious, and you get a mimosa refill.

Best coffee in Lisbon

Buna Specialty Coffee Shop

The atmosphere is cozy and peaceful. The coffee was really good.

Hello, Kristof

Specialty coffee shop and magazine store. Really cool place to sit and enjoy a book, or get some work done while sipping coffee.

Bowls&Bar

This breakfast brunch concept offered an idea that I found really interesting, a flower shop inside the restaurant. I think the idea is great, it makes the place cozy, the smell of the flowers contributes to a nice environment, who doesn't feel happy when seeing flowers, and you can take the feeling home. If one day I decide to start a coffee shop or brunch restaurant, I'm definitely stealing the idea!

Best hamburger in Lisbon

A Cultura do Hambúrguer

Probably not only the best hamburgers in Lisbon... but the best in the world! I have to admit I was not a hamburger person until I met Alex, but I can say that these are simply amazing. Our favorite: The Amalia.

Best Mexican food in Lisbon

Guacamole

This is the last food tip and I need to stop writing about food because I am drooling. Lisbon has such a valuable food offer for every taste, you will be surprised. Guacamole offers amazing Mexican burritos with all the ingredients that we Mexicans know about and love about authentic Mexican food.

Where to run or walk in Lisbon

Here are our top 3 places to jog or walk in Lisbon. I can guarantee you will enjoy the stunning views of the river, Portuguese buildings, and lovely gardens.

  • Park Eduardo VII

  • Promenade along the Tagus River towards Belem

  • Promenade along the Tagus River towards Alfama

How to transport in Lisbon

At first, we took the metro, but then we realized that sometimes it was cheaper to take Uber or Bolt. However, if you decide to take the metro you can get the card at any metro station and it will work as well for the buses.

Weather in Lisbon throughout the year

With an average of more than 300 days of sun a year, in my opinion, Lisbon has one of the best climates in Europe. We arrived at the end of August, and it remained sunny and comfortable until the end of October. By November it started to get chilly. December to February it was cold and cloudy.

Hope you find these tips useful for your next visit to Lisbon! Let me know how it goes and if you find more hidden gems in this lovely city.

Wishing you a good day,

Kassandra
