Why it's a good idea to visit San Sebastian (2022)

You finally decided to make a trip to Spain that's different from the usual Madrid, Ibiza, and Barcelona. And you are deciding where you should go. If the North of Spain is on your list of possible places to visit you clicked on the right post. Because there are plenty of reasons why you will love San Sebastian (Donostia) in Pais Vasco, Spain. Alex and I love to visit every time we can, it is basically on the top of our list of favorite places in the world. Not only because we have really great friends there, but also because it is the place with the most amazing cuisine I've tasted ever. Let's jump into the details!

Where to eat in San Sebastian?

Let's be honest, most of us travel for food. Every time we get to a new place, we start the typical google maps search to find the best places to eat. Here is a list of the best places to eat in San Sebastian (in my experience):

  • Va Bene - Amazing homestyle hamburgers opened until very late at night



  • Bodega Donostiarra - 1928 bar with delicious tapas, reservation required



  • Talo Panadería - Delicious sorodough bread, pastries, and coffee



  • Old Town Coffee - Amazing avocado toasts, Spanish style




  • Zumeltzegi - Great for pintxos experience



  • Arnoldo Heladería - Really nice gelato to eat while enjoying a nice walk

Helpful Tips


How to get to San Sebastian

  • Fly to Bilbao and then take a bus to San Sebastian right outside the airport

  • Fly to Biarritz (FR), and then take a bus to San Sebastian or a train to Hendaye and then a train to San Sebastian

Digital Nomads in San Sebastian

  • Internet is pretty good, you won't have any problem with that.

  • Hotels and Airbnbs are very expensive. If you are on a budget I would suggest going only for the weekend and staying in a close-by city.

  • If you need a supermarket, Sumer Amara is huge and will have everything you need

Best time to visit San Sebastian

  • Summer! From June to September you will catch the best weather. Otherwise, expect plenty of rain and cold weather.
