Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Updated: Apr 22, 2021

When traveling to the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura was the first island I visited along with my husband. It is one of eight islands of the Spanish archipelago in a tropical region located on the west coast of Africa, 100 km from Morocco.

If I could summarize it in two words I would say Boho & Savage. Fuerteventura has a relaxed and bohemian vibe that will attract you to stay even longer than what you planned. The island is perfect for surfers, and beach lovers. But it is also known for its March-like scenery and volcanoes, for those who prefer hiking and exploring. I can easily say that it is on the top of my favorite islands in the world.

Getting there

Our destination in Fuerteventura was Corralejo. We decided to stay close to the downtown being our first time at the island. We had no idea how it would be so we preferred to have a supermarket close and be able to walk to restaurants and cafes. There is an airport in Fuerteventura, we took the flight from Madrid and we did not rent a car, which later we regretted after finding out how cheap and easy it was to rent one. To get to Corralejo, take the bus from the airport. The stop is very visible outside of the airport on the pick-ups and drop-offs. Take the bus to Puerto del Rosario and there you will change to another bus to Corralejo. The bus makes several stops, so if you don’t have internet on your phone remember to download an offline map of the island so you know when to ask the driver to stop.

What to pack

Being my first time in the Canary Islands, I thought it would have warm tropical weather. But no, it was very windy and around 15ºC. Of course, I went in December and January, where temperatures are between 15ºC and 20ºC. And well, I have to say I could have packed better...

So I recommend that if you plan to travel during those months, pack a jacket and some clothes for that chilly temperature.

Where to stay

We divided our stay into two Airbnbs. For us, our priorities are to have good internet since we would be working remotely and attending online classes, to have an ocean view, kitchen, washing machine, and to fit our budget.

The first one was between 90-100 Euros, out of our budget but since it was my husband's birthday we decided to treat him. https://www.airbnb.mx/rooms/6892722 The place was amazing, you had a view of the sea from every corner of the two-bedroom apartment and you could hear the waves crashing all day and night. Internet speed is 300mbps, perfect and convenient.

The second one was between 50-60 Euros. https://www.airbnb.mx/rooms/12460754 The place is very basic, nothing luxurious, but you have a balcony looking at the beach and direct access. Note that the wifi is just 3mbps, so if you will need high-speed internet this might not be the right place.

It’s important to mention that when we were there exploring the island, we went to Lajares which is in the middle of the island, next to volcanos. And there are some pretty amazing houses there. So I would try it if we go back to Fuerteventura.

Where to eat

For breakfast: Barracuda, get the Waka Waka which for 5 Euros you get toast, eggs, guacamole, cheese, and coffee.

For pizza there are two great places: Pizzeria da Vivi 100% Italiano and Pizzeria Big Wave

For drinks in Corralejo:

* Cafe Anno 2011, go during the day, spend the day at the beach in the lounge area, and listen to live music.

* Los Monos sabios, this place has amazing cocktails and when I say amazing I mean even the design is unique.

For drinks in Lajares: Fuerte Vida, bohemian and chill place with a nice outdoor area to eat and have an artisan beer.

For dinner Tapas Oscar, we ordered my favorite of Spanish food: Pimientos de padrón

Don’t miss

Go to the popcorn beach, it’s a very curious form of rocks that look just like popcorn! If you can't or won't go to the popcorn beach, you can also find these rocks at Corralejo, just walk towards Playa del Medio.

I hope these tips based on my experience help you with your trip to Fuerteventura! What other tips would you share about this amazing island?
